Technical Stuff

Have you tried turning it off and then back on again?

Browsers

This website should display correctly in the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera*, and in some previous versions.  The website has not been tested in any other browsers.

* When browsing in Opera, please ensure that 'Fit to Width' in the View Menu is not checked as this makes very minor changes the spacing of the sub-menu bar.  Apologies - I am trying to work out why this happens.  See also the paragraph below on fitting photos to the screen.

I started to prepare the website on a 15" laptop.  Since moving to a 17" laptop, I have tinkered with the layout many times and it may now not quite fit on a non-widescreen 15" monitor.  On monitors larger than 15", the pages will centralise.

Zoom

The latest version of Firefox has a choice to Zoom Text Only in the zoom section of the view menu.  If you wish to increase the size, please ensure that this option is unticked, otherwise text will spill out of the menu block.  Opera and Internet Explorer will expand correctly.

Fitting photographs on the screen

The larger photographs available on the site will be automatically fitted to the screen size by Firefox and Internet Explorer.  In Opera 'Fit to Width' in the View Menu needs to be checked.  This, however, does slightly affect the spacing in the search and menu panels, but not significantly (see Browser section above).

Software

All of the pages on the site have been written using XHTML 1.0 Strict, except for the pages that carry maps and views, which use XHTML 1.0 Transitional.  These exceptions are because the maps and views use frames, which are not compatible with Strict XHTML.  All pages use CSS level 2.1

All of the pages have been validated using the W3C Markup Validation Service.

All of the CSS files have been validated using the W3C CSS Validation Service.

For the moment at least, there are no Java, Javascript or Flash applications.

The PDF Format Individual Reports and Places Lists are produced by the Family Tree Maker software package.
