Henry Jeffries and Ann Belcher
Ann's Ancestors
At Ann's birth in 1778, her family had been in Kingston Bagpuize for about 110 years. This page looks at the six ancestors that we can be sure about and three other possibe ancestors.
- Parents - Belcher, William and Church, Mary
-
- William Belcher was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire on 4 Nov 1733 by Thomas and Susannah. Mary was born in a place unknown about 1740, estimated from the dates of her marriage and the baptism of her first child, on 19 May 1766. On 26 Jan 1766 William and Mary married in Longworth, Berkshire, about a mile from Kingston Bagpuize. It seems likely therefore, that they arrived in Kingston Bagpuize in 1766. They baptised a further
seven children in the village. William was buried in the village on 30 Mar 1800. There are two possible burial dates in the Kingston Bagpuize parish records for a Mary Belcher - 14 Jun1799 and 3 Jun 1804. Unfortunately, no age at death is given. One is probably this Mary and the other her daughter.
-
- William and Mary's other children were James, baptised 19 May 1766; Mary baptised 21 January 1770 and buried about 1800 in KB; Susannah Belcher, baptised 12 April 1772; Benjamin Belcher, died 15 February 1774 (probably soon after birth); Elizabeth Belcher, baptised 11 Jan 1775; Martha, baptised 17 Mar 1776; Benjamin, baptised 18 February 1781, married 25 January 1811 in KB and buried 4 February 1855 in KB.

- Grandparents - Belcher, Thomas and Belcher, Susannah
-
- Thomas Belcher was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize on 17 Aug 1692 by Joseph and Dorothy. He married a woman called Susannah, whose forename we know from the Kingston Bagpuize parish records of the baptisms of their eight children. Estimating from the date of the baptism of her first child in 1821, Susannah was probably born about 1700 in a place unknown. I have been unable to find any marriage details. Thomas was buried in Kingston Bagpuize
on 11 Aug 1753, and Susannah was buried in Kingston Bagpuize on 17 Feb 1748.
-
- Thomas and Susannah's other children were Ann, baptised 11 March 1721 and buried 13 February 1722; Susannah, baptised 12 Jan 1723; Thomas, baptised 1 May 1726; Joseph baptised, 21 July 1728, married 8 December 1855 in KB, buried 3 July 1803 in KB; John, baptised 14 February 1730; Jonathan, baptised 21 May 1738, married 28 July 1770 in KB; James, baptised 19 August 1744, buried 19 April 1770 in KB.

- Great Grandparents - Belcher, Joseph and Holder, Dorothy
-
- Joseph Belcher and Dorothy Holder (possibly Alder) married in North Hinksey on 20 May 1678. On 16 Jul 1678, their first child, Mary, was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize. It seem likely, therefore, that they arrived together in Kingston Bagpuize in 1678. After Mary, they baptised eight more children in Kingston Bagpuize. They were both buried in Kingston Bagpuize, Dorothy on 3 Sep 1705 and Joseph on 18 Aug 1729. It is not known
when and where they were born; it may have been in North Hinksey, but there is a long gap in the parish records at the time when they would have been born.
-
- Joseph and Dorothy's other children were Mary, baptised 2 July 1678, buried abt. 1738 in KB; Sarah, baptised 16 July 1679, buried 9 January 1701/02; John, baptised 2 June 1681; Joseph, baptised 2 November 1683, buried 16 June 1684; Elizabeth, baptised 5 November 1685, buried 6 January 1743; Judith, baptised 21 December 1687, buried 4 February 1705/06; Martha, baptised July 1689; William, baptised 22 March 1691.

- Great Great Grandparents?
-
- There are two interesting birth entries on the IGI -
-
- Joseph Belcher baptised on 7 Jul 1653 in West Hanney by John Belcher and
- Dorrithie Alder baptised on 25 Feb 1635 in Denchworth by Thomas and Elizabeth.
-
- Denchworth and West Hanney are only about two miles apart and they are about five miles south of Kingston Bagpuize. Dorothy's surname of Alder is slightly different from Holder, but could be confused. At the time of Joseph and Dorothy's marriage on 20 May 1678, the West Hanney Thomas would have been about 24 years old, but the Denchworth Dorrithie would have been about 45 years old and, furthermore, she would have been about 57 years of age at the birth of
their last child, which seems pretty unlikely. However, there is the possibility that the baptism date is incorrect, and if the last two digits are transposed it gives the same year as for Thomas.
-
- At the moment, therefore, we cannot say whether we have found three of Ann's great great grandparents, but will have to wait and see if anything else turns up.
