Jeffries Family History
Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire
Ancestors who have lived in Kingston Bagpuize (Referred to throughout as "KB")
- Bason, Elizabeth (The Elder)
-
- The older Elizabeth Bason was born in Lockinge, Berkshire and baptised in Ardington, Berkshire on 5 Aug 1753 by John and Mary Bason. Her daughter, Mary, who was probably illigitimate, was baptised in Ardington on 19 July 1772. On 8 Jan 1785 Elizabeth married John Stone in Longworth, Berkshire, but there is no evidence to show that John was Mary's father. She was buried in KB on 22 March 1834. Her husband was buried in the village on 23
Aug 1835. It is not possible to pin down when she actually arrived to live in the village.
-
- Bason (Stone), Mary
-
- Mary Bason, the daughter of Elizabeth Bason was baptised in Ardington on 19 July 1772. On 18 May 1811, she baptised her (probably) illigitimate daughter, Elizabeth in KB. This suggests that she may have moved to KB before that date. In the 1841 census, she is shown at the age of 70 (date rounded) to be living in KB with her daughter, Elizabeth and her husband Jonathan Jeffries. She is still living
with them at the age of 79 in the 1851 census, when she is described as a pauper agricultural labourer. In both cases she was registered under the name Stone. She died in KB at the age of 82 on 15 Jul 1854 and was buried on 18 Jul 1854. On both the death certificate and the parish record her name is given as Barson.
-
- Belcher, Joseph and Holder, Dorothy
-
- Joseph Belcher and Dorothy Holder (possibly Alder) married in North Hinksey on 20 May 1678. On 16 Jul 1678, their first child, Mary, was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize. It seem likely, therefore, that they arrived together in Kingston Bagpuize in 1678. After Mary, they baptised eight more children in Kingston Bagpuize. They were both buried in Kingston Bagpuize, Dorothy on 3 Sep 1705 and Joseph on 18 Aug 1729. It is not known
when and where they were born; it may have been in North Hinksey, but there is a long gap in the parish records at the time when they would have been born.
-
- Joseph and Dorothy's other children were Mary, baptised 2 July 1678, buried abt. 1738 in KB; Sarah, baptised 16 July 1679, buried 9 January 1701/02; John, baptised 2 June 1681; Joseph, baptised 2 November 1683, buried 16 June 1684; Elizabeth, baptised 5 November 1685, buried 6 January 1743; Judith, baptised 21 December 1687, buried 4 February 1705/06; Martha, baptised July 1689; William, baptised 22 March 1691.
-
- Belcher, Thomas and Belcher, Susannah
-
- Thomas Belcher was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize on 17 Aug 1692 by Joseph and Dorothy. He married a woman called Susannah, whose forename we know from the Kingston Bagpuize parish records of the baptisms of their eight children. Estimating from the date of the baptism of her first child in 1821, Susannah was probably born about 1700 in a place unknown. I have been unable to find any marriage details. Thomas was buried in Kingston Bagpuize
on 11 Aug 1753, and Susannah was buried in Kingston Bagpuize on 17 Feb 1748.
-
- Thomas and Susannah's other children were Ann, baptised 11 March 1721 and buried 13 February 1722; Susannah, baptised 12 Jan 1723; Thomas, baptised 1 May 1726; Joseph baptised, 21 July 1728, married 8 December 1855 in KB, buried 3 July 1803 in KB; John, baptised 14 February 1730; Jonathan, baptised 21 May 1738, married 28 July 1770 in KB; James, baptised 19 August 1744, buried 19 April 1770 in KB.
-
- Belcher, William and Church, Mary
-
- William Belcher was baptised in Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire on 4 Nov 1733 by Thomas and Susannah. Mary was born in a place unknown about 1740, estimated from the dates of her marriage and the baptism of her first child, on 19 May 1766. On 26 Jan 1766 William and Mary married in Longworth, Berkshire, about a mile from Kingston Bagpuize. It seems likely therefore, that they arrived in Kingston Bagpuize in 1766. They baptised a further
seven children in the village. William was buried in the village on 30 Mar 1800. There are two possible burial dates in the Kingston Bagpuize parish records for a Mary Belcher - 14 Jun1799 and 3 Jun 1804. Unfortunately, no age at death is given. One is probably this Mary and the other her daughter.
-
- William and Mary's other children were James, baptised 19 May 1766; Mary baptised 21 January 1770 and buried about 1800 in KB; Susannah Belcher, baptised 12 April 1772; Benjamin Belcher, died 15 February 1774 (probably soon after birth); Elizabeth Belcher, baptised 11 Jan 1775; Martha, baptised 17 Mar 1776; Benjamin, baptised 18 February 1781, married 25 January 1811 in KB and buried 4 February 1855 in KB.

-
- Jeffries, George and Cooper, Susan
-
- George was born in KB on 27 Feb 1853 to Jonathan and Elizabeth Jeffries and baptised on 3 Apr 1853. Susan was born on 17 Jun 1856 in Tandridge Surrey to James and Mary Cooper. They were married on 24 August 1878 in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. At the time of the marriage, George was working as a house painter in Norbiton, Surrey, and Susan as a servant in Kingston. Their first child,
Jonathan Herbert was born on 16 Feb 1879 in Longworth and baptised in KB on 23 Mar 1879. Their second child, George William was born in KB on 15 May 1880 and baptised there on 18 July 1880. In both cases, the births/baptisms were registered in the Faringdon Primitive Circuit Records, and not in the parish records. George had left KB for Surrey at some time in the 1870, and may have met Susan through the Primitive Methodists. By the 1881 census, George
and his family were in Croydon, Surrey, so they may well have left KB sometime between George William's birth and the census. This would mean that Susan was living in KB only for a couple of years.
-
- Jeffries, Henry and Belcher, Ann
-
- Henry probably arrived in KB during the 1790s. On Christmas Day 1798 he married Ann Belcher, who was baptised in KB on 30 May 1778 by William and Mary. The mariage took place at the church in Fyfield, about a mile east of KB, because the KB church was being rebuilt. They had seven children, all boys, and all baptised in KB. Henry died in KB on 9
Mar 1849 and was buried there on 11
Mar 1849. Ann died in KB on 28 Jan 1849 and was buried there on 30 Jan 1849. Both died of Typhus Fever, as did five other family members, which tragedy is described here. Henry is the first of our Jeffries ancestors of whom I am certain, but it is quite likely that he is the Harry born to Robert and Elizabeth Jeffrey in Highworth, Wiltshire on 26 Mar 1775.
-
- Jeffries, Jonathan and Bason, Elizabeth (The Younger)
-
- Jonathan was the fourth child (and son) of Henry and Ann, and was baptised in KB on 14 Feb 1808. On 9 Apr 1832 he married Elizabeth Bason (The Younger) in KB. Elizabeth, the (probably) illigitimate daughter of Mary Bason, was baptised in KB on 18 May 1811. In the 1841 to 1871 censuses they are shown as living in KB together. Jonathan was shown as an agricultural labourer, but only in the 1851
Census is Elizabeth shown as having an occupation and that is as a laundress. Jonathan died in KB on 28 Feb 1879 and was buried there on 5 Mar 1879. In the 1881 census Elizabeth is shown as living with her daughter, Elizabeth and her husband George Hurley, in nearby Longworth. She may have gone to live with them when George and his family left for Surrey. Elizabeth died in Longworth on 1 May 1881, but there is no burial record there or in KB.
-
- Jeffries, Jonathan Herbert
-
- Jonathan Herbert was born on 16 Feb 1879 in Longworth and baptised in KB on 23 Mar 1879. It may be that Susan gave birth while staying with George's sister, Elizabeth. He left when George and Susan moved to Surrey about 1880.
