Ardington is a small village in the Vale of the White Horse, about six miles south of Kingston Bagpuize.
Nowadays, the churches of Ardington, Lockinge and East and West Hendred share a vicar and the services rotate round the four churches.
On 9 Apr 1832, Jonathan Jeffries married Elizabeth Bason, who was born in Kingston Bagpuize, the illigitimate daughter of Mary Bason. Mary was baptised in Ardington on 19 July 1772, the illigitimate daughter of Elizabeth Bason. This Elizabeth was baptised in Ardington on 5 Aug 1753 by John and Mary Bason.

The tree is a Wych Elm and is actually in the adjoining parish of Tubney, where it is known as the Tubney Tree. It is now decayed. Tubney has no village, which may have led Matthew Arnold to think of it as the Fyfield Tree. I think, too, that the Fyfield elm is more euphonious.
