Mum was particularly fond of outdoor bowls. On summer Saturday afternoons she and Dad would play on Bostall Heath with friends from the Cage Lane Church. Mum must have displayed some talent, because one afternoon she was approached by someone who asked whether she would like to play in a team. She turned down the offer because they played on Sundays, which would have clashed with her church-going.
