My mother attended Eglington Road School in Plumstead until the age of 11 (about 1929) and then Plum Lane School, also in Plumstead, until the age of 14 (1932). Both schools are still open.
Gran always insisted that Mum and her brother and sister were turned out nicely. Mum remembers that she would have her hair put in rags to make it curl, but that by the time she got to school it was completely straight again. She often tells me how she wishes her hair was wavy like mine!
The first photograph is of Plum Lane School and the other of Eglington Road School. In the Eglington Road picture the plaque at the nearer end has the logo, SBL, standing for the School Board of London. At the other end, just visible, is another plaque which says Eglington Road School AD 1885. Just under the yellow alarm box is a plaque which reads - On this site the Rt Hon W E Gladstone delivered his last speech to his Greenwich constituents November 30th 1873. The third photograph is Mum's school leaving reference. The headmistress was very prescient in saying that Mum would do well in a shop.
