The photo is of two tickets from the Last Tram Week in London in July 1952 and some later bus tickets of various denominations. The tram tickets were probably from route 36, 38 or 42, which ran along Plumstead High Street. When Mum worked in Southwark she travelled by tram on route 46, which ran up Academy Road, close to Engineer Road. Routes 44 and 72 ran along the same stretch of road. I cannot remember trams myself as I was only three years old when they stopped. I
can remember travelling in trolleybuses
though,
and I can remember this type of ticket, which the conductor kept in a hand-held rack, with the tickets being held in by a piece of elastic. The tickets were clipped
by a device attached to a shoulder strap. It must have been quite
awkward for the conductor when the tram or bus was moving and there were standing passengers.
When Mum worked at the CWS factory at Silvertown she used to travel by bicycle. This meant going through the foot tunnel at Woolwich, as using the ferry would have taken too long. Only a limited number of bicycles were allowed in the lift so sometimes she would carry hers up or down the stairs. Bicycles had to be pushed through the tunnel.
Dad had a motorcycle before he was married.
