MYTHOMANIA brings together 8 artists who engage
with painting and its conventions. It considers an ongoing ambivalence
or double bind within painting practice, in which a long held association
with ideas of truth or veracity coexists with accusations and expectations
of illusion, fabrication and manipulation.
The term ‘mytho mania’ refers to lying that is taken to an
abnormal and extravagant degree; lying that is emphatic in its delusions.
The intricacies and contrived logic that it implies are proposed in the
exhibition as a model for an approach to painting, that is conspicuously
aware of rules and procedures both historically inherited and self inflicted.
L’ exposition MYTHOMANIA rassemble huit artistes engagés dans la peinture, et ses modes de fonctionnement. L’exposition prend en considération une ambivalence continue de la peinture, dans laquelle une association de longue date avec les no tions de vérité, ou de véracité, coexiste avec des accusations et des préméditations d’illusions, de machinations, et de manipulations. Le terme “mytho mania” se réfère au mensonge pris à un niveau anormal et excessif, emphatique dans sa fausse croyance. Les complexités et la logique forcée supposées par un tel état, sont proposées dans l’exposition comme un modèle d’approche pour la peinture; un modèle manifestement averti des règles et procédures, celles héritées de l’histoire, et celles auto-infligées.
